While occasional tripping can be caused by a single faulty appliance, regular, unexplained tripping across multiple circuits indicates a deeper issue. It suggests that your wiring is deteriorating, experiencing loose connections, or simply cannot handle the simultaneous power demands of modern life.
2. Flickering, Dimming, or Buzzing Lights
If your ceiling lights regularly flicker, dim, or buzz, the issue is rarely just a loose bulb. Flickering lights typically point to fluctuating voltage, loose wiring connections, or deteriorating circuits behind your walls.
These loose connections create a high-resistance path, forcing the electrical current to arc (jump across gaps). Arcing creates extreme localized heat and represents an immediate fire risk.

This green liquid is plasticiser leaching. It occurs in certain types of grey PVC-insulated cabling manufactured between 1965 and 1971. Over time, a chemical reaction between the copper and the PVC insulation causes a green liquid to bleed out of the cables. This goo is visually unpleasant, chemically degrades switches and sockets, and can eventually cause short circuits, requiring a complete home rewire to resolve safely.
5. Hot, Discoloured, or Smoking Sockets
If any socket or switch plates feel warm to the touch, display discolouration or scorch marks, or emit a faint burning smell, you must switch off the power immediately.
Warmth and discolouration are clear indicators that the wiring connections behind the plate have deteriorated, creating dangerous levels of heat.
